Removing A Broken Case 02/18/2008
When a cartridge case breaks off in a full-length resizing die, remove the decapping/expander plug and rod from out of the large end.
Take a piece of drill rod that will just enter the case neck in the die and put it through the small end about halfway into the case. Put a couple of wraps of string around the drill rod and slide it into the neck until the string seals any space between the case neck and the rod. The rod should still extend part way into the case body but not all the way. Turn the die and rod combination mouth up and fill the case with hot lead (bullet metal) or Cerrosafe. Be sure to let it cool and then turn the die on its side in a padded vise. Take one good hammer and give the rod one or two sharp raps. Out goes the rod, lead, and case - all in one piece with no damage to the die body.
